- An alternative approach to cultural influences on organizations. Strongly critical
of past work in this area. Proposes explaining cultural influence through the different
"cognitive frameworks" that managers bring with them from their cultures.
Not clear how this has as much explanatory power as, say, Edward T. Hall's work, but the
critical discussions are useful.

Business, 5th ed., Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632 USA (2005) ISBN
0131927671.
- The
book is really a short introduction to anthropology, with business-related
examples. It tries to teach some concepts related to culture and
encourages respect and understanding of other cultures. The most business-specific
chapter is one on negotiation. There are brief but interesting cross-cultural
scenarios in each chapter. in which the reader is asked to analyze
them and recommend a response. The author's own analysis appears in an appendix.
He also packs remarkably many interesting cultural tidbits into a short
book; e.g., Chinese traditionally view kissing with disgust because
it suggests cannibalism.

are fascinating and well researched.

When confronted with opposing values, cultures develop survival strategies that often foster wealth building. Organizations can use these strategies to their advantage. Hampden-Turner and Trompenaars identify seven "opposing" value dimensions, pose the dilemma these contrasts create, and suggest ways to reconcile differences."
